Sun Burnt Saturday

The MintThe MintI woke up feeling sun burnt from Friday’s craziness.  Christine and I went to Ihop for breakfast, and then I jetted off to see my friend who is visiting from Kuwait in Temecula.  We visited for a couple hours by his friend’s pool and I could feel myself getting more and more burnt (lobster red).  I decided I should get out of the sun and head back home, hoping to get to my PMB in time before it closed to see if The Bicyclists dvd arrived in the mail.  Yay, it arrived!  Even better news is that the way I took home was much faster than going I-5 with all the backed up traffic!

As soon as I got home I popped in The Bicyclists DVD and started to watch it.  I was so exhausted (from the sun, maybe?!) that I fell asleep as soon as I pushed play and sat down.  I woke up around 7pm, just in time for me to eat something, chat a little with friends on Facebook, change clothes, put on some makeup, fix my hair and then go pick up Casey to go to the Pete Hopkins show at The Mint.  Part of my job is to post Los Angeles and Seattle concerts/shows.  I had actually post a show for Pete Hopkins in Seattle (where he’s from, he now lives in Los Angeles) and then he told me about his Los Angeles show, so I post that.  He gave me comp tickets in exchange for my friend Casey to write a write up on his show.

Little did we know it was 80’s prom night at The Mint, we totally would have dressed up. Casey and I arrive at 9pm, but we find out that Pete doesn’t go up until 10pm, no biggie.  We sit at the bar and have some dinner and drinks (I drank water, but Casey had some delicious beer), listening to the opening band perform.  We think we see Pete walk in, but he looks much different from his pictures on line (another point on why your headshots NEED to match your current look, not that he’s an actor, but still), we both agree that is him.  Ten o’clock rolls around and yep, who we thought was Pete, was Pete going on stage to set up his gear for his show.

He reminds me of a mix between Michael Jackson and Johnny Depp.  Pete is a huge fan of Michael Jackson and was bummed when he died, so he wrote a tribute song for Michael called, “Mr. Jackson”.  It was actually a pretty good song and he sounded great live.  I tried to take as many pictures as possible, but honestly I need a professional camera, instead of my nice, cute, compact, and great for everyday pictures, Canon.  I also recorded a video of him playing his “Mr. Jackson” song.

When Pete had about 20 minutes left, the guy who was controlling all of the sound gave him ten minutes to finish up – what?  He just got cut ten minutes?  WOW!  Casey thought he did an awesome job and was thinking about what she should say in her write up for the show.  Pete finished with a 1980’s Michael Jackson song to go with the theme of the party for that night.  Everyone was up there dancing to his whole set, and loved it, so we could not figure out why they cut him short.   After the show we got to meet him in person. He was an extremely sweet, humble, down to earth type of guy who was really interested in his fans and his career.  You hardly see musicians like that these days that are so personable.  He gave both Casey and I a hug right away, and chatted with us about his show.

We decided not to stay for the next band, even though it was crazy watching them set up (9 band members on a tiny stage and they all had their own instrument).  We found out that they did not sing, just play… You would expect (or at least Casey and I did) that if you are playing in a club, you would have lyrics, no? We hit the road… Great night!
