My Dog Baxter

BaxterBaxterFor my boyfriend’s birthday I asked what he would rather have: a dog, something for his car, or his default gift; REI gift card.  Ever since his sister brought her dogs over to our apartment, he realized how much he really missed having a dog around and decided that he wanted a dog more than anything.

Over a week ago, we went to several of the animal shelters near where we live.  He found a dog he absolutely loved at the Burbank shelter named Maverick, but he was 35 pounds and my apartment limit is 20, not to mention the fact I have a studio.  I promised him we could get a dog like Maverick once we buy a house and have a yard, because I too love bigger dogs.  We left the Burbank shelter and drove to a few more before coming across this adorable, giddy, smart and lovable Chihuahua.  Neither of us really cared to have a small dog much, nor did either of us think we’d ever adopt a Chihuahua, but this little guy was too precious.  We did not even get a chance to take him on a walk, because he was just brought in as a stray the day before and with that shelter, animals must wait 5 days before having outside human contact.

We decided to keep looking around for other dogs, but decided that this Chihuahua was our guy.  I came back to the shelter once it opened on the following Wednesday because that was the first day this little dog was aloud to be held or adopted.  To my surprise there were about 6 people in line to adopt different dogs, which made me nervous mine would be taken, but I was in luck.  I got all of our new dogs paperwork, adopted him and they sent him off to the vet to get fixed, which means I couldn’t take him home until Thursday.

My boyfriend had pre-named him Baxter, so when I picked him up, I had his little tags already as well as a few items he would need, bed, food, collar, leash, etc.  Since Baxter was a stray it took a while for him to warm up to me and trust me, but not too long.

My boyfriend came over this last weekend to see his new pup for the first time since the shelter and both were crazy about each other!  My boyfriend is amazing with dogs, so much so that he even took Baxter off his leash and Baxter stayed right by his side (but not for me, of course).  When I went out to walk Baxter, my boyfriend was getting in his car to run an errand and Baxter saw him get in, he froze, then as soon as my boyfriend started his car, Baxter freaked out not wanting to be left behind and ran over to him and begged my boyfriend to take him with.

Once my boyfriend left on Sunday night, Baxter was super sad.  He looked all over the apartment for him and came back to me with sad eyes.  I am glad we found the right dog!
